ABOUT

MISSION AND HISTORY

My Sistas is a new program where we provide a friendly and safe environment for girls to freely express themselves. We teach them to love and appreciate themselves and eachother, and  value healthy relationships. We also inspire  and empower girls while increasing their self-esteem and confidence.

The purpose of My Sistas is to bridge the gap between our female youth throughout Monmouth County. We will empower one another through peer discussions, cultural dance, creative art, verbal and written expression, and Original (& some old school) songs. Emphasis on building healthy relationships, focus on making responsible choices, and bonding together to commit to become positive leaders within our homes, schools, and communities.

The idea of My Sistas began with two mothers wondering what their daughters could do to keep them engaged outside of school. After unsuccessfully finding anything of interest, we began to see what was missing in our community. Instead of waiting for someone else, we put our heads together and decided to create a program ourselves that we felt is needed within our community.

Our first official My Sistas meeting took place February 2016. Our weekly one hour meetings fostered a little over fifteen excited girls. Within the first few weeks the girls requested we extend our time together because we continuously found ourselves wrapped up in our weekly lesson past the one hour. During our twelve week Spring program, we had several guest speakers, completed art & craft projects, and had a Black History Month celebration. We also taught the girls etiquette lessons, how to make healthy choices, and had a self improvement workshop.

We have many exciting ideas for the future and will continue to give our girls a place to be themselves.
